Ingredients:

For the Dough

3 cups all-purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

2 Tbsp shortening or lard

1 cup warm water (approx.)

For the Filling

(choose your favorite or combine)

Classic Beef: 1 lb ground beef or shredded beef

1/2 cup onion, finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup cooked pinto beans or refried beans (optional)

1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, queso fresco, or Monterey Jack)

Salt, pepper, and a pinch of cumin or chili powder to taste

For Frying

Vegetable oil or lard for deep-frying
